As the leaves change and the weather cools, many of us cozy up in sweaters and sip pumpkin-spiced everything. But for our pets, fall can mean a whole new set of skin and coat challenges. Seasonal shedding, dry air, and cooler temps can affect your dog or cat’s grooming needs and overall skin health. Here are some easy and effective grooming and skincare tips to keep your furry family members happy, healthy, and looking their best this fall. 5 Fall Grooming & Skin Care Tips for Cats and Dogs.

🍁 1. Brush Away the Fall Shed

A fluffy gray cat is being groomed on a table. A person in a green apron holds a brush, ready to groom. The setting is bright and clean.

Just like in spring, pets often go through a secondary shedding cycle in the fall to prepare for their winter coat. Regular brushing helps:

  • Remove dead hair and dander

  • Distribute natural oils

  • Prevent matting, especially in long-haired breeds

Tip: Use a deshedding tool or slicker brush a few times a week to keep their coat in top shape. Bonus: It’s a great bonding time too!

🍂 2. Watch for Dry, Itchy Skin

Cooler weather often means drier air—both outside and indoors. This can cause itchy, flaky skin in both cats and dogs.

  • Signs to watch for: excessive scratching, licking, dandruff, or redness.

  • What helps: Add a skin-supporting supplement like omega-3 fatty acids (from fish oil or flaxseed) to their diet. These support a healthy, hydrated coat.

At FurBabies, we also love plant-based support. Our all-natural Itch & Skin Support formula includes anti-inflammatory herbs and functional mushrooms that nourish the skin from the inside out.

🐾 3. Keep Those Paws Protected

As sidewalks and trails get colder and damper, your pet’s paws can become cracked or irritated.

  • Wipe paws after walks to remove moisture, salt, or debris.

  • Use a natural paw balm to protect and soothe cracked pads.

Pro Tip: Trim the fur between their paw pads to prevent ice balls and mud buildup as the season progresses.

🧼 4. Bathe Wisely

Over bathing can strip your pet’s skin of essential oils—especially in the dry fall season. Stick to bathing every 4–6 weeks unless they get into something particularly messy.

  • Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo made for pets.

  • Follow up with a moisturizing rinse or pet conditioner.

  • Make sure they’re completely dry, especially between the toes and ears.

FurBabies’ Soothing Wash with Reishi and Shiitake mushrooms supports the skin’s microbiome while calming inflammation and irritation.

🍃 5. Boost Their Immunity Naturally

Fall is also the beginning of cold and flu season—for us and for our pets. A healthy immune system helps protect them from seasonal allergies and skin flare-ups.

Functional mushrooms like Turkey TailReishi, and Chaga can offer gentle, daily immune support for pets. That’s why we include them in several of our formulas here at FurBabies—because healthy skin starts from within.

Final Thoughts from Tami 💚

Fall is a beautiful season, and with a little extra attention, it can be a cozy, comfortable time for your pets, too. Whether it’s brushing, balancing their skin microbiome, or giving their immunity a boost with functional mushrooms, your fur babies will thank you for the extra TLC.
