Can Turkey Tail Mushrooms and Probiotics shrink dog lipomas? What the Science actually says

by Tami Kersch CEO FurBabies Pet Products Inc.

lipomas in dogs, Can Turkey Tail Mushrooms and Probiotics shrink dog lipomas? What the Science actually says

If you've recently discovered a lump on your dog, you're not alone. One of the most common concerns veterinarians hear from pet owners is, "Can this lump be treated naturally?"

Recently, a number of supplements have appeared on the market (social media FaceBook Instagram) claiming that specific combinations of turkey tail mushrooms and probiotics can reduce or even eliminate lipomas in dogs. Some companies even suggest that only their proprietary blend contains the "correct" combination of ingredients capable of producing these results.

At FurBabies, we could claim this is true and use it to sell more Turkey Tail Mushrooms, but we don’t. We prioritize science and evidence over marketing claims.

So Can Turkey Tail Mushrooms and Probiotics shrink dog lipomas? What the Science actually says:

Understanding What a Lipoma Is

A lipoma is a benign fatty growth made up of mature fat cells (adipocytes). These soft, movable lumps are extremely common in middle-aged and senior dogs and are generally considered harmless.

Unlike cancerous tumours, lipomas consist of normal fat cells that have accumulated in one localized area. Their development is believed to be influenced by genetics, age, body condition, and localized metabolic factors—not immune system dysfunction.

This distinction is important because it directly affects whether an immune-supporting supplement could realistically impact a lipoma.

The Truth About Turkey Tail Mushrooms

Turkey tail mushroom (Trametes versicolor) is one of the most researched medicinal mushrooms in both human and veterinary medicine.

Turkey tail contains compounds called polysaccharopeptides (PSP and PSK), which have been studied for their ability to support immune function. Research has shown these compounds may help activate immune cells such as T-cells and natural killer (NK) cells.

In veterinary oncology, turkey tail is often used as a supportive supplement alongside conventional cancer treatment protocols.

However, there is a critical difference between cancer cells and lipoma cells.

Cancer cells are abnormal and can trigger an immune response. Lipoma cells are normal fat cells. Because the immune system does not recognize lipoma tissue as a threat, stimulating immune function does not provide a known mechanism for the body to selectively attack or remove a lipoma.

To date, there are no published clinical studies demonstrating that turkey tail mushrooms can shrink canine lipomas.

What About Lactobacillus acidophilus?

Lactobacillus acidophilus is a well-known probiotic commonly used to support digestive health and maintain a healthy balance of gut bacteria.

Probiotics can play an important role in:

  • Supporting digestive function

  • Maintaining healthy gut microflora

  • Supporting gut-associated immune tissues

  • Improving stool quality in some animals

These benefits are valuable, but there is currently no scientific evidence showing that Lactobacillus acidophilus can break down, dissolve, or reduce established subcutaneous fatty tumours.

The biological pathways involved in gut health and immune support simply do not overlap with the mechanisms required to eliminate a lipoma.

Why Do Some Owners Believe Their Dog's Lipoma Shrank?

When owners report improvements after starting a supplement, several factors may be responsible.

1. Weight Loss

If a dog loses body fat through diet and exercise, the fat cells within a lipoma may also decrease in size. The lipoma hasn't been eliminated—it has simply become smaller along with the dog's overall fat stores.

2. Changes in Inflammation or Fluid Retention

Lumps can feel larger or smaller depending on hydration levels, minor inflammation, pressure, positioning, or how the dog's skin moves during examination.

3. The Lump Was Never a Lipoma

Without proper veterinary diagnosis, it's impossible to know exactly what a lump is.

Many different masses can resemble lipomas, including:

  • Sebaceous cysts

  • Histiocytomas

  • Abscesses

  • Mast cell tumours

  • Inflammatory swellings

Some of these conditions may naturally change in size or even resolve on their own, creating the appearance that a supplement was responsible.

If inflammation is your concern, take a look at our line of oral drops designed to support a healthy inflammatory response. While these products will not remove lipoma lumps, they will help support the body in managing inflammation and overall comfort.

The Importance of Proper Diagnosis

No supplement should ever replace proper veterinary evaluation of a new lump.

The gold standard for diagnosing a lipoma is a Fine Needle Aspirate (FNA), a simple procedure that allows a veterinarian to examine cells from the mass under a microscope.

An FNA can help determine whether the lump is:

  • A benign lipoma

  • A cyst

  • An inflammatory lesion

  • A potentially cancerous growth

Knowing what you're dealing with is always the first step before considering any treatment plan.

What Is the Current Veterinary Standard of Care?

For confirmed lipomas, veterinary medicine generally recommends one of two approaches:

Monitoring

Most lipomas require no treatment and are simply monitored for changes in size, texture, or mobility.

Surgical Removal

Surgery remains the only definitive method for removing a lipoma. This option is typically considered when a lipoma:

  • Restricts movement

  • Causes discomfort

  • Grows rapidly

  • Interferes with normal function

Supporting Your Dog the Right Way

Turkey tail mushrooms and probiotics can absolutely be valuable tools for supporting overall wellness, digestive health, and immune function.

However, pet owners should be cautious of marketing claims suggesting that a specific proprietary combination of these ingredients can shrink or eliminate lipomas.

Final WOOF

Can Turkey Tail Mushrooms and Probiotics shrink dog lipomas? What the Science actually says

No, these claims are not supported by scientific evidence. While turkey tail mushrooms and probiotics can both be beneficial additions to a pet’s overall health routine, there is currently no research showing that they can shrink, eliminate, or dissolve established canine lipomas.

When it comes to lumps and bumps, the most important step is always obtaining an accurate diagnosis from your veterinarian. Once you know exactly what you're dealing with, you can make informed decisions based on evidence rather than marketing claims.

Because they’re more than pets—they’re family.
